Charity very religious with a deep respect for traditions, remained old fashioned all her life, had a basic caution and economy as well as being very practical. She had an inquiring mind and sought knowledge as evidenced by her subscription to the "Cincinnati Inquirer" all her married life. According to her granddaughter, Emma Prather Gilmer, "she was, as she said, never well. She had what she called dyspepsia - never in bed, but after meals would start taking her medicine. She rarely ever saw a doctor."375

Just prior to the War Between the States, Franklin moved to Danbury as indicated by a promissory notes with A. H. Joyce in 1861 and John Pepper in 1871. "Branson's Business Directory" of 1867-68 list Prather as a merchant for dry goods, etc in Danbury and a manufacturer with a tannery at Colesville in Northern Stokes County. During the same period he is listed as a partner of the Prather & Banner Tobacco Factory and of a merchandise store in Mount Airy, perhaps in partnership with his oldest son Thomas William. There was a tannery in Winston(Forsyth Co.) and a store in Mocksville(Davie Co.) in partnership with his son John Franklin. They said of him that he always made a sale if he could not get one price he would take another.
His lone effort for public office found Thomas Franklin losing the Stokes County Commission's race in 1870 although he received 600 votes as a Republican. He and Charity moved back to Mount Airy in 1871/2 but returned often to Piedmont Springs and Danbury in the summer to vist friends and children.375
