21 May 1863 - Letter from Alexander Merritt,Jr. brother to his brother Joseph Martin Merritt:
"Dear Brother, I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to inform you I am well. Hoping when these lines comes to hand they may find you all well. We are camped at Hanover Junction 25 miles from Richmond. I have received a letter from you today and was glad to hear from you but I would like to come home but there is no chance for me to get a furlough until the volunteers come home so if you have to come you must stop at Hanover Junction and inquire fo rthe 50 Regt. Mr. C. B. Ziglar and Wm. Shouse come by her(e) going to the 27 Regt. I sent a letter by them to Wm. Boyd. I heard he was killed but I don't know whether it is so or not. I might hear before long. You say you and John went a fishing and caught some minners. If John was here he could catch some big fish. Such big ones he can't pull them out. We are on the South Hannah river and little river guarding railroad briges and digging Breastworks. Our brigade have been attached to Gen. Winders division. He has command of Richmond and the brestworks round about there and we may stay around Richmond or go on to Fredericksburg, they talk about going into Maryland but I think it will be a bad move. I would like to see you(r) fine son[Joseph Benjamin]. I know he is a buster. They are looking for another fight at Harrisburg for the(y) are taking carloads of men an grainery(?)-----
so I must close excuse the bad riting and rite to me soon. I got the letters you sent to Greenville and the Martha Davis sent too.
so I must close. Alex B. Merritt

14 Mar 1864 - A letter from Alexander Merritt to his son Joseph Martin Merritt while he was in the Civil War.
“Dear Son, your letter of the 6th of March I received today and it was a great satisfaction to all to hear
from yhou and to hear that you was well and getting plenty to eat, and I would like to be down with you
a while and help you and the rest of the boys eat fish and the big boat that old Jeffs boys is going to get
and said down to New Bern, and take it and run old Abes troops in to the sea and drown them, and take
Norfolk and hang old Butler and make the yankees leave for a more peaceful part of the world.
It appears from what I can gather from the newspapers and ..... county and state in the raising of troops
there will be a powerful effort made this spring to subjugate the yankee nation and have peace on their
own terms in a few months. It may turn out that way, but I don’t think it will. There will be a great many
hard battles fought and most of the soliers killed and wounded and no peace while there is any to fight.
The enrolling has been going on seven days at Winston and they are making a tolerable clean business
of it between 18 and 45 years old. The two sets of militia officers hold their office without being
interrupted this time. The first two days they enrolled 29 and I have not heard how many they have got
since. Tommorrow they will finish for this time. They take great authority over the men. As soon as they
are enrolled, they are marched to the point of the bayonet to the guard house and kept there until sent to the army. The last sparks of liberty is gone out of this part of the world.
MARCRUM V. BANNER come to be enrolled. He has got a petition fixed up to get out by being over seer
for his Father, but he says he don’t think it will clear him. He wants you to write him if can get room in
your company or in Capt. Snow’s company.
I will now tell you about some other things. In the first place we are all well. Hope your wife and children is well, the old man’s folks and MARKCRUMS is well. James Ingrim has got home on parole and brings
the sad news of Alexander B. Merritt*. Alexander was taken prisoner in the third day’s battle at Gettys-
burg in Pennsylvania will several thousand others and sent to Fort Delaware, and was sick some time
and they sent him to the hospital and Sank Hardgrove told Ingrim that he never saw him any more after
he went to the hospital, but some there told him he was dead. Ingrim was sent to Washington City. He
was not with Alex and Hardgrove at Fort Delaware. He has left about five months ago and it appears that
he has been dead more than five months. If he had lived until now he would have had a chance to come
home, but the sound of his footsteps and pleasant voice will hear no more forever. You must excuse my
bad writing. Write to me soon........
Alex B. Merritt to Jos. M.Merritt
It is now 12 o’clock at night”
