Research: No record has been made of them traveling back to NC after their migration west so I really doubt they died in North Carolina. They actually crossed the Kansas plains by covered wagon. They were caught in a snow storm and had to stay in Mullinville, Kansas for a week. The males had to stay in the stable while Maggie stayed in an inn with the children. They went all the way to Stanton County, Kansas which is in the far SW corner of Kansas. John Jarvis Martin was appointed the first sheriff of the county by the governor. He only held the position briefly until elections were held. The family didn't stay in the SW for long and ended up settling back in Butler County, Kansas. 393
