103. Virginia BANNER. Born on 10 Feb 1831 in Surry Co., NC. Virginia died in Banner Elk, Watauga Co., NC on 7 Apr 1895, she was 64. Buried in Banner Elk Cemetery.

1850 - Forsyth Co.,NC - Virginia is living in the household of her father in law on the census.

In 1848 when Virginia was 16, she first married Marcrum Van Buren BANNER (62) , son of Benjamin BANNER Jr. (20) (ca 1792-10 Oct 1879) & Margaret "Peggy" KIGER (1802/1808-), in Yadkin Co., NC. Born ca 1831/1833 in Stokes Co., NC. Marcrum Van Buren died in Point Lookout, MD on 17 Feb 1865, he was 34.

Marcrum was conscripted as a Private in the Civil War in Winston, NC on 22 Oct 1865, in Co. D, 21st Regiment, N. C. Infantry Troops, Confederate. On 9 Feb 1865, Marcrum was captured near Petersburg, Va. by Federal Troops and sent to Point Lookout, MD and received by the 5th Army Corps on 8 Feb 1865. He was listed as absent and a prisoner of war in Jan and Feb 1865. Marcrum died of "neuralgia" on 17 Feb 1865 at Point Lookout, Md. in Prisoner of War Guard Yard 6957. He was buried the same day.

Marcrum and Virginia were first cousins.341

On 9 Mar 1876 when Henry Martin was 22, he married Mary Elizabeth "Betty" LOWE, in Surry Co., NC.368 Born in 1856 in Surry Co., NC.

Virginia second married William R. PROFFITT. Born on 30 Nov 1815 in Watauga Co., NC. William R. died in Avery Co., NC on 28 Oct 1893, he was 77. Buried in Banner Elk Cemetery.

104. Napoleon BANNER. Born on 4 Apr 1833 in Surry Co., NC. Napoleon died in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC on 14 May 1920, he was 87.

Napoleon and Isabella were first cousins.

Napoleon married Isabelle BANNER (111) , daughter of Anthony E.(Ephriam?) BANNER (40) (6 Dec 1810-24 Jan 1894) & Elizabeth MARTIN (abt 1813-). Born on 5 Dec 1842 in Stokes Co., NC. Isabelle died in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC on 31 Aug 1867, she was 24.

They had the following children:

105. William BANNER. Born on 6 Nov 1835 in Surry Co., NC. William died in Pulaski, Tenn.

William was a deaf-mute.

William married Mary ALDRIDGE.

They had the following children:

106. Christopher Columbus BANNER. Born on 26 Oct 1840 in Surry Co., NC. Christopher Columbus died in Avery Co., NC on 25 Feb 1936, he was 95.

Columbus fought in the Union Army, 4th Regiment, Tennessee Calvary during the Civil War. He and his wife lived in Newland, NC. Columbus went with his brother Newton to the Gettysburg Reunion of Civil War veterans. ( See notes on Newton Banner, brother of Columbus)

In 1864 when Christopher Columbus was 23, he married Caroline "Callie" HILLIARD, in Of Mitchell, NC. Born in Mar 1850 in NC. Caroline "Callie" died in Newland, NC on 23 Nov 1936, she was 86.

They had the following children:

107. Newton BANNER. Born on 8 Oct 1842 in Surry Co., NC. Newton died in Watauga Co., NC on 8 Dec 1941, he was 99. Buried in Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Watauga Co., NC.

Newton served in the Civil War for 4 years for the Union army. He served in the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Calvary. He scouted Cumberland Gap, sat on a rock, and took his oath on the corner of the three states, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. He was small of stature and weighed less than 100 pounds. He told the Federal officer that he wanted to fight and if he didn't take him in this army, he would join the other side. He carried dispatches to Murfreesboro and had four holes in his hat. In Decatur, Alabama, he spent time in a hospital, then to Nashville and to Edgeville, Tenn. and on home. His feet were bleeding when he arrived in Banner Elk, NC. He served four years in military service and received honorable discharge.
Newton was invited to Gettysburg, Pa. for a reunion of the soldiers of the Civil War. His brother, Columbus, accompanied him. They were invited to the White House where they did buck dancing for the President, Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Newton lived on George's Gap Road near Cove Creek School. He was carpenter by trade, a pioneer and a traveler. He built the Cove Creek Academy 1884-1885. He was also a great humorist and full of fun.
One incident that was printed in the "Democrat" says he tried to buy a bushel of indigo to brighten up and give the Blue Ridge another dip because it appeared to be getting pale. He was also a mail carrier for about four years from Lenoir to Sugar Grove, NC, and for two years from Fish Springs to Morganton, making two trips of about 80 miles by way of Sugar Grove, as well as other destinations.

On 1 Jul 1867 when Newton was 24, he married Sophronia E. MAST, in Carter Co., Tenn. Born on 15 Jul 1850 in Tenn. Sophronia E. died in Watauga Co., NC on 22 Aug 1931, she was 81. Buried in Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Watauga Co., NC.

They had the following children:

iii. Susan "Sue" A.. Born on 20 Feb 1871 in Watauga Co., NC. Susan "Sue" A. died on 14 Mar 1849 in Watauga Co., NC.

In Oct 1870 Susan "Sue" A. married Wiley F. SHERWOOD. Wiley F. died on 14 Sep 1944 in Avery Co., NC.

iv. Daniel "Danny" B.. Born in 1879 in Watauga Co., NC. Daniel "Danny" B. died in Watauga Co., NC in 1908, he was 29.

v. Arthur M. "Bill". Born on 27 Mar 1887 in Watauga Co., NC. Arthur M. "Bill" died in Avery Co., NC on 1 Oct 1972, he was 85.

Arthur M. "Bill" married Alice COMBS. Born on 14 Jan 1891 in Watauga Co., NC. Alice died in Watauga Co., NC on 16 May 1961, she was 70.

vi. Tom "T. J. ". Born on 29 May 1893 in Watauga Co., NC. Tom "T. J. " died in Avery Co., NC on 20 Sep 1979, he was 86.

On 29 Sep 1912 when Tom "T. J. " was 19, he married Julie BAIRD, in Avery Co., NC. Born on 2 Jan 1894 in Watauga Co., NC. Julie died in Avery Co., NC aft 1979, she was 84.


108. Luther BANNER. Born on 6 Jul 1846 in Surry Co., NC. Luther died in Avery Co., NC on 24 Aug 1925, he was 79. Buried in Banner Elk Cemetery.

Luther married Elizabeth TUTTLE.

They had one child:

109. Martin Luther BANNER II. Born on 5 Sep 1848 in Surry Co., NC. Martin Luther died in Avery Co., NC on 2 Jan 1933, he was 84.

Martin,Jr. purchased land ca 1879 on the west side of Klatchie Creek(now west fork of Linville River) and now known as Sugar Mountain #2 community. He built his home on the exact spot where Rev. Paul Townsend’s home now stands, remaining there until his death. 397

On 9 Jun 1870 when Martin Luther was 21, he first married Sarah JOHNSON, in Watauga Co., NC.

On 4 Sep 1881 when Martin Luther was 32, he second married Ella Esther GIBBS, in Mitchell Co., NC. Born on 26 Oct 1868 in Yancey Co., NC. Ella Esther died in Mitchell Co., NC on 15 Oct 1891, she was 22.

Finley married Ethel BROWN DANIELS.

Julia married Husband unk CHRISTIE.

iv. Edgar. Born on 17 Aug 1891 in Watauga Co., NC. Edgar died in Avery Co., NC on 30 Apr 1968, he was 76.


On 30 Oct 1893 when Martin Luther was 45, he third married Candance GIBBS, in Watauga Co., NC. Born on 24 Jul 1865 in Watauga Co., NC. Candance died in Avery Co., NC in 1931, she was 65.

Candance is the sister to Ella, Martin's second wife.

They had the following children:
