America married Eli Taylor PRESNELL, son of Miles PRESNELL & Rilda HICKS. Born on 2 Mar 1845 in Ashe Co., NC. Eli Taylor died in Beech Creek, Watauga Co., NC on 12 Jan 1939, he was 93. Buried in Presnell Cemetery, Watauga Co., NC.

Smith Oliver was shot and killed by a black man from Tennessee.

On 8 Oct 1907 when Elizabeth "Bettie" was 34, she second married Daniel Valentine "Dan" YATES, in Watauga Co., NC. Born on 10 Dec 1870 in Wilkes Co., NC. Daniel Valentine "Dan" died in Avery Co., NC on 18 Apr 1953, he was 82.

Henry Banner served in the Civil War. He and Orpha lived in Newland, NC and in Tennessee.

Henry B. married Orpha Mahalia LUSK. Born on 11 Oct 1837 in Holland. Orpha Mahalia died in Carter Co., Tenn. on 17 Jan 1894, she was 56. Buried in Walnut Mt. Cemetery, Carter Co, .Tenn.

Orpha's parents brought her to America from Holland when she was 10 yrs. old.

122. John William BANNER Jr. Born on 1 Jul 1848 in Watauga Co., NC. John William died in Watauga Co., NC on 7 Nov 1917, he was 69.

John, Jr. was a miller by trade. He also ran a sawmill business.

John William first married Margaret DUGGER Jr.. Born on 3 Oct 1856 in Watauga Co., NC. Margaret died in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC on 7 Nov 1917, she was 61.

Margaret is a sister to Shepherd Monroe Dugger, who was the author of a number of books. Shepherd was known as "The Grand Old Man of the North Carolina Mountains". Two of his books were about the mountain country and its people: " The Balsam Groves of Grandfather Mountain" and" War Trails of the Blue Ridge".

They had the following children:
i. Udora. Born on 11 Sep 1879 in Watauga Co., NC. Udora died in Bluefield, W. Va. on 31 Aug 1953, she was 73.

Udora married James W. MAIN. Born on 15 Jan 1880 in Watauga Co., NC. James W. died in Bluefield, W. Va. on 29 Mar 1950, he was 70.

James and Udora lived in Bluefield, West Virginia, where James worked for the Norfolk and Western Railroad.

ii. Pardee. Born on 27 Feb 1882 in Elk Mills, Tenn. Pardee died in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC on 6 Sep 1918, he was 36.

Pardee married Vera Blanche SHOEMAKER. Born on 27 Jun 1891 in Watauga Co., NC.

iii. George Thomas. Born on 24 Mar 1886 in Banner Elk, Watauga Co., NC. George Thomas died in Falls Mills, Virginia on 31 Aug 1952, he was 66.

George Thomas married Reba Maude LAFON. Born on 30 Dec 1900 in Kimball, West Virginia. Reba Maude died in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC on 14 Jan 1946, she was 45.


John William second married Mollie Mary Louzenia HODGES (SHOEMAKER).

iv. Charlotte Mildred. Born on 23 Sep 1900 in Banner Elk, Watauga Co., NC. Charlotte Mildred died in Elizabethton, Tenn. on 9 Aug 2003, she was 102. Buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Mildred Banner Piercy, 102, 212 Holly Lane, Elizabethton, died Saturday, August 9, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Piercy was a native of Banner Elk, Avery County, N.C., and had been a resident of Elizabethton for over 70 years. She was the daughter of the late John William Banner Jr. and the late Mollie Louzenia Hodges Shoemaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roger E. Piercy, with whom she was co-owner of Carter County Motor Company, and by a brother, two sisters, three half sisters and two half brothers.
Mrs. Piercy was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was a 1918 graduate of Lees-McRae Institute and was a former school teacher in Banner Elk, Newland and Landis, N.C.
Survivors include a nephew, Claude Banner Jr., Welch, W.Va.; a niece, Adele Christie, of Kansas; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Piercy, Johnson City. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
The graveside service for Mrs. Piercy will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 11, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, August 12, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 2:10 p.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations in memory of Mrs. Piercy to First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, 325 East E. Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Charlotte Mildred married Roger Erwin PIERCY. Born on 28 Aug 1903 in Banner Elk, Watauga Co., NC. Roger Erwin died in Elizabethton, Tenn. on 24 Jun 1965, he was 61.
