170. Dr. Charles Whitlock BANNER Sr. Born on 29 Apr 1867 in Surry Co., NC. Dr. Charles Whitlock died in Guilford Co., NC on 20 Aug 1964, he was 97.
Dr. Charles Whitlock Banner,Sr., 97 year old physician who practiced medicine in Greensboro for approximately 50 years before retiring in 1949, died at 1:45pm yesterday at his home on N. Elm St.
A native of Mt. Airy, NC, he graduated as a physcian and surgeon at the Medical School of the University of Maryland. He was later certified as a specialist in ear, eye, nose and throat diseases at the Polyclinic and the College of Graduates in Medicine at Philadelphia.
He then studied ophthalmology in Philadelphia at Wills Eye Hospital and took further work at the Royal Ophthalmic Institute in London.
Dr. Banner supplemented this training by clinical observations in hospital in the U. S., Canada and Vienna, Austria.
He opened his first office in Charlotte in 1900. A committee of prominent Greensboro men persuaded Dr. Banner to move his office here in 1901.
Dr. Banner raised money to construct a building on North Elm Street, which bears his name.
Dr. Banner was a founder of the Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical Diseases and Preventive Medicine and served on this state's governing board of the Institute.
He was secretary-treasurer of the N. C. Surgical Club which was formed before the American College of Surgeons in arranging clinical observations in medical centers in the states and Canada.
He was one of 34 American Physcians and surgeons selected to experiment and practice maxillo-facial surgery in World War I and was placed in charge of that speciality which was then in its infancy in base hospitals of Vittel Center, France.
Always interested in the promotion of institutional medical care of sick and the injured, he performed his first operation here in 1901 when there was not a hospital bed available.
He was a member of the committee of the Guilford County Medical Society which secured St. Leo's Hospital -- now extinct.
As president of the society, Dr. Banner took the initiative in setting up and managing three emergency hospitals during the influenza epidemic of 1919.
For a number of years, Dr. Banner was chief of the medical staff at Sternberger Hospital and was president of the Greensboro Commission for Crippled Children.
Among his many contributions to Greensboro was the fact that he was the prime organizer in the formation of L.Richardson Hospital. He served as president of its governing board, as chief of its medical staff, and chairman of its building committee.
In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Banner had a part in the religious, educational, and civil affairs of Greensboro for more than half a century.
A steward of West Market Street Methodist Church, he was a member of the committee that supervised the construction of its educational building in 1952.
He was appointed trustee of the endowment fund of Greensboro College in 1918 and was head of the college's finance and Investment Board for 36 years.
Dr. Banner was a member of the committee that selected the site and supervised the construction of the Greensboro Country Club's original building.
He was a charter member of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and of Greensboro Rotary.
Dr. Banner was married in 1900 to the late Josephine Fawcett Banner, a native of London,Ontario, and in 1950 to the former Dr. Elizabeth Young of Cedartown, Ga.
Mrs. Banner survives as does a son by the first marriage, C. W. Banner,Jr. Four grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at West Market Street Methodist Church. Dr. E. C. Few, former pastor of the church and now of Winston-Salem, will officiate. The Rev. Thomas J. C. Smyth, rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, will also officiate.
Burial will be in Mt. Airy.
The body will remain at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home until placed in the church at 1 pm Tuesday.
