233. Guard Eustus BANNER. Born on 6 Nov 1899 in Unicoi Co., Tenn.

Guard Banner is the last surviving witness to the "Hanging of the Elephant". Guard saw the elephant hung in Erwin,Tenn. when he was 16 years old on September 13, 1916. The elephant killed his trainer while in Erwin and the people found it necessary to kill the elephant. Charles Edwin Price has written a book called, "The Day They Hung The Elephant". Mr. Price interviewed Guard for this book and states - "Erwinite Guard Banner and his son, Bob, spent much time with me during my research. Guard told me about his recollections of the hanging and made certain that I 'completely understood' the method by which Mary was hung. Guard is a folklorist's dream. Although in his nineties, his memory is sharp, and he loves to recount past experiences."⁴¹⁶

On 31 Jul 1921 when Guard Eustus was 21, he married Clara Matilda FORD, in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Born on 23 Jul 1901 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Clara Matilda died in Unicoi Co., Tenn. on 14 Mar 1972, she was 70. Buried in Fishery Union Ch. Cemetery, Unicoi Co., Tenn.

When Clara was ask what her name was, she said, "Sarah, Celdrea, Rebecca, Matilda, Caldonia, Elizabeth, Polly Ann, Minerva, Clara Ford Banner".

234. James Robert BANNER. Born on 3 Jan 1904 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. James Robert died in Albuquerque, New Mexico on 7 Aug 1964, he was 60. Buried in Suncrest Memorial Park, New Mexico.

On 12 Nov 1934 when James Robert was 30, he married Edith HAASE, in Crawford Co., Mo. Born on 8 Jan 1915 in Missouri.

They had the following children:

235. Dell Cenia BANNER. Born on 5 Aug 1894 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Dell Cenia died in Unicoi Co., Tenn. in 1974, she was 79. Buried in Fishery Union Ch. Cemetery, Unicoi Co., Tenn.

On 26 Oct 1921 when Dell Cenia was 27, she married David M. HUGHES, in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Born on 31 Mar 1876 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. David M. died in Unicoi Co., Tenn. in 1946, he was 69. Buried in Fishery Union Ch. Cemetery, Unicoi Co., Tenn.

236. Thomas Lewis BANNER. Born on 5 Dec 1906 in Galveston, Texas. Thomas Lewis died in Marietta, Georgia on 1 Apr 1966, he was 59. Buried in Sullivan Co., Tenn.

On 21 Feb 1926 when Thomas Lewis was 19, he married Daisy Bell LOWERY, in Washington Co., Tenn. Born on 20 Jan 1907 in Washington Co., Tenn. Daisy Bell died in Sullivan Co., Tenn. on 13 Nov 1994, she was 87. Buried in Sullivan Co., Tenn.

237. Earl Franklin BANNER. Earl Franklin died in Dec 1986 in Unicoi Co., Tenn.

238. Nellie Margaret BANNER. Born on 19 Nov 1908 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Nellie Margaret died in Sullivan Co., Tenn. on 23 May 1952, she was 43. Buried in Fishery Union Ch. Cemetery, Unicoi Co., Tenn.

On 1 Jun 1930 when Nellie Margaret was 21, she married William Francis "Bill" HINKLE, in Unicoi Co., Tenn. Born on 11 Jun 1907 in Unicoi Co., Tenn. William Francis "Bill" died in Sullivan Co., Tenn. in Apr 1956, he was 48. Buried in Fishery Union Ch. Cemetery, Unicoi Co., Tenn.
