1728 May 1 - Goouchland County Virginia was created from the western portion of Henrico Co.,Va. The western portion of Goochland Co., Va. went toward the formatiion of Albemarle County Virginia in 1744. 21

1755 Apr 20- Goochland Co.,Va. - John STANDLEY married Elizabeth Howard. 22

1767 Jul 25 - Bedford Co.,Va.- John had l90 acres of land surveyed south of Staunton[Roanoke] River adjacent to George Holland and also adjacent to Jacob STANDLEY. 16

1775 - Surry Co.(now Wilkes Co.), NC - John is on the tax list in John Hudspeth's Tax District. John is paying 1 poll and this places his birth at 1759 or before. Also on this list are John Howard married Elizabeth STANDLEY, sister of John STANDLEY in Goochland Co.,Va. in 1765], & Joshua Howard his son and Peter Holland[son of George Holland] - 3 polls. 23

1778 Aug 8 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry #279 - John STANDLEY enters 200 acres of land in Wilkes lying on the Mill Creek of Hunting Creek beginning at the fork of said mill creek and running up both forks including his improvement for compliment. This is John STANDLEY born ca 1738 as he is the only John that shows on tax lists in Wilkes County to this point. A different Entry Date is shown on the NC land Grant #702, land entry #279, of 8 Feb 1780. This land adjoined James Love[sold to Evan Bell], Job Cole[sold to Archibald Lovelace] and William Combs [sold to Benjamin Crabtree]. 24

1779 Feb 11 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry #828 - Stephen Harris enters 100 acres south fork of Hunting Creek conditional line JOHN STANDLEY including HARRIS STANDLEY's plantation. 25
A search in the NC Wilkes County land grants at the NC Archives did show any land grants for Stephen Harris. However, NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #647, Land Entry #818 dated 6 Oct 1784 for George Combs has this same description for land. The warrant for this land entry dated 6 Oct 1784 shows that Stephen Harris's name is marked out and George Comb's name is written in.

1779 Mar 4 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry #918 - Stephen Harris enters 50 acres on South fork of Hunting Creek beginning at JOHN STANDLEY's line down both sides. Stephen Harris transferred this entry to Job Cole on 3 Jan 1781. 26

1780 Feb 18 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry #1632 - John STANDLEY entered 100 acres on Mill Creek at said [John] STANDLEY's other line up creek on both sides. John transferred this land entry to George Combs on 12 Sept 1785. George Combs received NC Wilkes Land Grant #842 for this property. 27
The entry number #1632 must be a duplicate land entry number as there is NC State Grant for John STANDLEY for this entry number.The description of the warrant in John Standleys entry #1632 is "one hundred acres of land lying in the county aforesaid lying on the Mill Creek Beginning at sd. Standleys other line and & run up the sd creek on both sides for compliment". John STANDLEY received NC Land Grant #730a for this 100 acres of land. John STANDLEY did not register either of his land grants with the Wilkes County, NC Register of Deeds office.

1780 Feb 25 - Wilkes Co,NC - Land Entry #1645 - REUBEN STANDLEY enters 100 acres on south side of Hunting Creek at James Love's line as so to ascertain various land between JOHN STANLEYs line and Thomas Towson's line. On 28 Feb 1785, Reuben STANDLEY transferred this entry to William Combs. Reuben STANDLEY has made entries on the land to the east of John STANDLEY which he transferred to James Love, and to the west of John which he transferred to William Combs, all adjacent to John STANDLEY. 27

1780 Mar 20 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Land Entry # 1737 - Job Cole enters 50 acres on Mirey Branch Hunting Creek between road goes from Thomas Towsons to JOHN STANDLEYS. On 4 Apr 1785, Job Cole transferred this land entry to William Combs. William Johnson was a witness to this transaction. This note is written on the grant. William Combs received NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #638 for this property. 28

1782 - Wilkes Co., NC - John is in Alexander Gordon's tax district and is the only STANDLEY on this tax list showing 400 acres of land valued at 25 pounds, 2 horses/mules valued at 11 pounds and 5 cattle valued at 5 pounds. 29
The 400 acres that John is paying taxes on his land entry #279 of 200 acres on Hunting Creek, land entry#1632 of 100 acres on Hunting Creek and a duplicate land entry #1632 of 100 acres on Hunting Creek.

1784 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John is on the tax list paying one poll and 400 acres of land. On this same list along with are Reuben and Jacob STANDLEY. 30

1785 Apr 5 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John's land entries #279 and #1632 were both surveyed today. The chain carriers were Thomas and William Combs. 31

1785 Jul 26 - Wilkes Co.,NC -Road Order:
It is ordered that the following jury view the road where Crane's Path leaves the Waggon Road the best way near Grassy Nobs: Daniel Holeman[bought Reuben Standleys 100 acres on Hunting Creek], Alexander Morrison, Benjamin Crabtree[bought land from William Combs], George Combs[lives next door to John], William Combs[lives next door to John], JOHN STANDLEY, Bennitt Roberts, William Lewis, James Young, James Love[next door neighbor to John STANDLEY], James Fletcher, James Reynolds, William Morrison, Michael Souther, and Leonard Keeling. 32

1786 -Wilkes Co., NC - John is taxed in Alexander Gordon's District in 1786 and is paying 1 poll and 300 acres of land. This 300 acres are his 200 and 100 acre land grants. Harris STANDLEY also shows in this tax district paying one poll. This is the first time that Harris shows on a tax list. The taxable age for this year is age 21 or older, this places the birth of Harris STANDLEY at 1765 or before. 33

1786 Oct 26 - Wilkes County, NC John is in the P's and Q's as being double taxed "Ordered Baswell Baker, JOHN STANDLEY, John Hersey, William Nance, James Paris, Peter Guinn & John Gortney be doubled taxed for failing to give in acct of taxable property, supposing each to have 1 poll." John did not pay his taxes in 1785 and now has to pay "double" on his taxes for the year 1786. 34

1787 - Wilkes Co.,NC - John is on the NC State Census in Nathaniel Gordon's District[Nathaniel and Alexander's districts are combined for census]. John is showing 1 male age 21-60 year[John Sr], 2 white males under 21 and above 60 and 6 females. Jacob STANDLEY is also in this district. This census shows John's birth as being born between 1727-1766. 35


On 20 Apr 1755 when John (I) was 18, he first married Elizabeth HOWARD, daughter of David HOWARD, in Goouchland Co., Va.22 Born ca 1738 in Virginia. Elizabeth died in Wilkes Co., NC bef 1767, she was 29.

1791 Apr 19 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Lucy is on the on 1790 Census in the Second Company or Nathaniel Gordon's District showing 2 males under 16 and 5 females. Next to Lucy is her son, John STANDLEY. Lucy is thought to be John's mother and it is highly likely she is since John named a daughter Lucy. 36

On 14 Nov 1765 when Elizabeth was 21, she married John HOWARD Sr., son of David HOWARD, in Goouchland Co., Va.37 Born ca 1742 in Virginia. John died in Wilkes Co., NC bef Jul 1811, he was 69.

1755 - Albemarle Co., Va. - Reuben is on in Obediah Woodson's District. This area is described as below the Buffalo River to the County line. Jacob STANDLEY also on this list but in Col. Randolph's district. This area is described as being below Buffalo River. 40

1775- Surry Co.(now Wilkes Co.), NC - Reuben is on the 1775 tax list in Capt. Cleveland's District showing Reuben paying 2 polls, himself and likely his son. 41

1778 Jul 4 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Wilkes Land Entry #237 - Reuben STANDLEY entered 200 acres of land in Wilkes County lying on Hunting Creek Beginning at the foot of Lazy Hill running down the said creek on both sides including his improvements thereon where said STANDLEY now lives for compliment. 42 43 [This entry was transferred to James Love on 25 Jan 1780 and James Love received a NC Land grant #261 for this land.] On 4 January 1792(Deed B-1:351-352), James Love of Mecklenburg Co.,NC sold this land which measured 198 acres to Evan Bell. After Evan Bell died, the land(Deed F-1:105-106 dated July 1804) was divided between Evan Bell's 4 sons, Zadock, Reason, William and David Bell.

1779 Dec 4 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Entry #1338- Reuben STANDLEY enters 50 acres on Hunting Creek at Lazy Hill both sides of Creek. 44 [Reuben transferred this entry to James Love on 31 Mar 1780 and James Love received a NC Land Grant for this land.] . In 1792, James Love of Mecklenburg Co.,NC also sold this piece of property to Evan Bell which measured 39 ¾ acres. This piece of property also divided between Evan Bell's 4 sons after Evan's death.

1780 Jan 10 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Entry #1501- Alexander Gilreath entered 150 acres on a branch of Hunting Creek opposite REUBEN STANDLEY's and below Samuel Lansdown. 45

1780 Feb 7 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Entry #1601 -Joshua Towson entered 200 acres on north side of Hunting Creek Creek at REUBEN STANDLEYS land that he sold to James Love[Wilkes Entry #237]. 46

[This 50 acres is land on Kings Creek that Reuben purchased from Gersham Allen.] He is paying a poll for himself and on 2 other 21 year old men. John and Jacob STANDLEY are also on this tax list.

1784 Mar 2 - Burke Co., NC - Jacob and Reuben are named in a supoena from Burke Co., NC to the sheriff of Wilkes Co.,NC to testify on behalf of David Baker, plantiff vs. Joseph White defendant. David Baker is a neighbor to Joseph and Rickles STANDLEY in Burke Co., NC. A connection between Joseph and Rickles Stanley to Jacob Standley's family has not been found.51

1785 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Reuben is on the tax list paying 2 polls and 100 acres of land. Jacob STANDLEY is also on this list. 52

1785 Sept 7 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - Deed, Reuben STANDLEY bought 50 acres on King's Creek from Gersham Allen for 100 pounds. Witnesses were JACOB STANDLEY and Richard Green. This deed was proved Jan Term 1786 by JACOB STANDLEY. 53

1786 Nov 14 - Deed, Reuben purchased land 106 1/4 acres on Hunting Creek on from James Love Jr. for 100 pounds on Hunting Creek adjacent Osborn Keeling. Witnesses were Jo.[Joseph] Winston and Wm.[William] Sharpe. Deed proved in January 1787 by William Sharp. 55

1787 Aug 14 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - David and Thomas Witherspoon sold 10 acres of land on Kings Creek including a grist mill for 200 pounds to Reuben STANDLEY. Witnesses were Ananias Allen and Suffiah Aldridge. 1793 Feb - Deed from David and Thomas Witherspoon to Reuben STANDLEY for 10 acres proved by Anaias Allen. 59

1788 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - Reuben is on the tax list in Capt. John Witherspoons Dist. (was Capt. Isbells) in 1788 in Wilkes Co.,NC. He is paying on 90 acres and one poll. 60

1788 May 27 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - Reuben is mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a deed when Joel and Patty Coffey sold 145 acres on Kings Creek adjoining Reuben STANDLEY and STANDLEY's Mill. Witnesses: Levi Laxson, Spill Trible and Ananias Allen. 61

6 Dec 1788 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Reuben sold 100 acres of land on Hunting Creek adjacent Osborn Keeling to Daniel Holman for 50 pounds Witnesss were John Love and John Wilson. Oct 1790 John Love proved the deed from Reuben STANDLEY to Daniel Holeman. 62

John Witherspoons District on showing 3 males over age 16[born 1774 or before-this is probably Reuben, Charles and another male, 1 male under age 16[born after 1774] and 5 females[born before 1790]. 67

1793 Sept 3 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - Deed, Reuben and Sarah STANDLEY sold to Robert Netherly of Burke Co., NC 10 acres with a Mill Seat[STANDLEY's Mill] on Kings Creek for 150 pounds. Witnesses were Thomas Castevens, William Rash and John Welch. Jul 1797 - Deed from Reuben and Sarah STANDLEY to Robert Nethery of Burke County for 10 acres proved by John Welch. 69

1793 Sept 3 - Wilkes Co.(now Caldwell Co.),NC - Deed, Reuben and Sarah sold land to Robert Netherly of Burke Co., NC 80 acres on Kings Creek for 150 pounds. Witnesses were Thomas Castevens, William Rash and John Welch. Jul 1797 - Deed proved from Reuben and Sarah STANDLEY to Robert Nethery of Burke County for 80 acres by John Welch. 70

1800 - Burke Co.(now Buncombe Co.), NC - Reuben is on the census showing on the census as age 26-45[1755-1774], one female over 45[born before 1755] and one female age 10-16[1784-1790]. His sons, Charles and Thomas STANDLEY also in Burke Co., NC. Other Standleys on this census are Joseph and Rickles STANDLEY. They are located in the part of Burke that became Mitchell Co., NC.71

1802 - Burke Co.(now Buncombe Co.), NC - Reuben is on Capt. Burgins Tax list paying NO POLL. Charles Stanley is next to him with Thomas Stanley showing in the next column. 72
Reuben is not paying a poll indicating that he has turned age 50 and therefore born in 1752 or before.

1805 - Burke Co.(now Buncombe Co.).NC - Reuben is on the tax list in Capt. John Armstrongs Company paying taxes on 115 of land and paying NO poll. Charles STANDLEY also on this list. 73

5. Jacob (II) STANLEY Jr. Born ca 1753 in Virginia.

1776 Mar - Surry Co.,NC - Jacob STANDLEY and Harris STANDLEY[Jacob's brother] both served 7 days in the Light Horsemen. Capt. William Shepherd for the Services of 9 Companies of Lt. Horse on an Expedition intended to Wilmington. They were both paid 2 pounds, 9 shillings and 6 pence. 74

1778 -Wilkes Co.,NC - Jacob Jr. took the oath of allegiance along with his father, Jacob STANDLEY Sr. and his brother, John, and his brother, Harris STANDLEY. 19

1780 Mar 6 - Burke Co., NC - Jacob is a chain carrier along with Benjamin Adkins on NC Land Grant #861 for 200 acres on John's River patented to John Moore on 9 Nov 1784 adjoining Benjamin Adkins and William Fletcher. Surveyed by Christopher Beckman. 75

1780 Aug 1 - Maryland - There is a Revolutionary Pay Record for a Jacob Standley who served from 1 Aug 1780 through 1 Nov 1783 when he was "invalided". Other Stanleys on this list are Salady Standly(free person of color), William Standly and Michael Standley. This Jacob may not the same person as Jacob who came to Wilkes Co., NC, all though when he left Wilkes, he may have gone to Maryland to join Revolutionary War Militias . 76

1789 Aug 15 - Morgan Dist.(Wilkes or Burke Co., NC)- Jacob Jr. is indebted to the state for 20 pounds to be void if he attends next court and gives evidence for the state against Demsey Sutton and others. 77

The author speculates that Jacob Sr. died and his son Jacob Jr. moved out of Wilkes County in the direction of Tenn. Descendants of Jacob's line are in Anderson Co.,Tenn. Anderson Co.,Tenn. was formed in 1806 from Campbell Co.,Tenn. White polls were taxed between the ages of 21 and 50 years. A tax list for Anderson Co.,Tenn. taken on June 16, 1802 shows the following Stanleys: Harris STANDLEY one poll, Reuben STANDLEY one poll and Page STANDLEY one poll. All three of these fellows born 1781 or before.

6. Harris (I) STANLEY. Born ca 1756 in Virginia. Harris (I) died in Howard Co., Mo. bef 1840, he was 84.

1776 Mar- Surry Co.,NC - Harris served 7 days in the Light Horsemen. Capt. William Shepherd for the Services of 9 Companies of Lt. Horse on an Expedition intended to Wilmington. Jacob, his brother, was also on this same expedition. They were both paid 2 pounds, 9 shillings and 6 pence. 74

1778 -Wilkes Co.,NC - Harris took the oath of allegiance along with his brothers John STANDLEY, Jacob STANDLEY Jr.and his father, Jacob STANDLEY Sr. 19

1779 Feb 10 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Land Entry #828 - Stephen Harris enters 100 acres south fork of Hunting Creek, conditional line with JOHN STANDLEY, including HARRIS STANDLEY's plantation. 25
A search in the NC Wilkes County land grants at the NC Archives did not show any land grants for Stephen Harris. However, NC Wilkes Co. Land Grant #647, Land Entry #818 dated 6 Oct 1784 for George Combs has this same description for land. The warrant for this land entry dated 6 Oct 1784 shows that Stephen Harris's name is marked out and George Comb's name is written in.

1779 May 10 - Wilkes Co., NC - Wilkes Land Entry #991- Harris STANDLEY enters 100 acres on Meadow branch, first fork of James Brown's mill creek, waters of Hunting Creek. 80
Harris STANDLEY transferred this entry to Job Cole on 5 May 1784. Job Cole received NC Land Grant #694 for this land entry.

1779 Jun 9 - Wilkes Co.,NC - Harris was apprehended by a warrant on suspicion (sic) of being a Vagrant. Ordered the sheriff take said STANDLEY into his safe custody. 81

1783 Mar - Burke Co., NC - Harris STANDLEY and Aron Gibson were the chain carriers for a survey. NC Land Grant #1338 patented to Micajah Sansom on 16 Nov 1790 for 160 acres on west side of Lower Creek adjoins Christopher Beckman. 82

1783 Mar - Burke Co., NC - Micajah Sansom and Harris STANDLEY were chain carriers for NC Land Grant #970 patented for William Gibson on 7 Aug 1787 for 200 acres on Lower Creek adjacent Micajah Sansom. 82

1801 Nov 6 - Anderson County Tennessee created from parts of Knox and Grainger Counties. 83

1802 - Anderson Co., Tenn. - Harris on the tax list paying one poll placing his birth at 1781 or before. Reuben and Page Stanley also on this list. 84

1830 - Howard Co., Mo. - Harris is on the census showing 2 males age 15-20, one male age 70-80[Harris], one female age 20-30 and one female age 60-70. 85

Harris (I) married Rachel ALDERSON. Born ca 1760 in Virginia.
