FALL 2000 QUERIES SPURLOCK - I am looking for a John SPURLOCK that lived in Surrey County about 1770-1800. Not at all sure about the dates. Allen SPURLOCK, was supposedly his son was born in 1775, supposedly in Surrey County. I have been looking for this connection for about 25 years and any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. The only real fact I have is that Allen living in Amite, County, Mississippi in 1850 said he was from NC. Another genealogist guessed that he was the son of John living in Surrey, County, North Carolina in approximately 1770-1800. No other information is available that I have found. Allen was first found in Ogelthorpe, GA, purchasing a piece of land with Sarah on 6 Nov 1791. It is not known if Sarah was Allen's sister, or mother. David Allen paid for the land leading us to believe that Allen was a minor and David was acting on his behalf. Allen's mother could have been an Allen possibly.Thomas Jefferson Spurlock, III
HANES - MELTON - Seeking Information: I am looking for family history of my great grandfather, Emmett Winfield HANES, born 1872?, Surry County, NC. He was married to Adilla Ida MELTON. I have located the MELTON genealogy, now I would like some help locating Emmett Winfield HANES. Todd M. Hanes
CHEEKE/CHEEK- William CHEEKE (possibly CHEEK by 1800) was my immigrant ancestor, on whom I have much information gathered from Bedford County, Virginia, the Virginia State Library and Archives and family records. In 1794 at age 62, he sold his 200 acre homestead in Bedford, and no further record of him appears in that area. One son, Henry, by whom I am descended, moved shortly thereafter to Adair County, Kentucky. One other son, Thomas, moved to somewhere to the Carolinas, and a third son, Nicholas, is also believed to have moved to Kentucky. An oral tradition in the family is that Henry had a keen memory, and never mentioned any other siblings, or whatever became of his father and stepmother. I do have a copy of a Bedford County, VA deed with his signature, and feel I can obtain another sample of his handwriting. Recently, a microfilmed handwritten will of a William CHEEK (sic) of Surry, NC turned up in the LDS records #1579715. He appoints a son, John CHEEK as executor, and gives all his stuff to his wife, with the plantation where she lives, and 140 acres of land in Wilkes County. He gives his "old place" to his six children by his first wife: Thomas, Henry, Susannah, "Tella" (orStelley?) Millia (or William?) and Elizabeth. It is dated 3/24/1802, signed by William CHEEK, and countersigned by sons Nicholas and John. That a Henry, Thomas, and Nicholas turn up in this will looks suspiciously un-coincidental! I seek help in locating the following: 1. A xerographic copy of this William CHEEKs will (not a transcript) - to compare handwriting. 2. Any records of land purchases and sales in Wilkes or Surry County for William CHEEKE/CHEEK or his heirs. 3. Any indication from public or church records of where William, his wife or other CHEEKS in Surry County might be buried. Identifying a church affiliation may help in further tracing William's origins in England before his arriving in Virginia between 1747 and 1763. 4. U. S. Census records for Surry County for 1800 indicating if a William CHEEK or CHEEKE lived there, and details on the size and composition of his household. Logan McK.Cheek. III
BRYANT - SAPP- Does anyone have any information pertaining to (1) the male child living in the household of Reuben BRYANT in 1820 OR (2) "the small grandchild whose mother was deceased and whose father had left the state" according to the 1822 Reuben BRYANT pension file. Does anyone have any information pertaining to the 10-14 age males listed on the 1830 Federal Surry County Census in the households of Alfred BRYANT, Reuben BRYANT, Thomas BRYANT, Gideon BRYANT, and Charles BRYANT. My great-great grandfather would have been 14/15 in 1830 and I thought through a process of elimination, I might be able to more closely identify the household in which he may have lived. Does anyone have any information pertaining to the John SAPP listed on the 1840 Federal Surry County Census, particulary the male 20-30 years of age. Connie Sapp Miller
